Head-to-head, it beat out runner-up CBS (in repeats) by 9 shares in both 18-49 and 25-54. Over at NBC, the net's comedy block couldn't gain any ground despite facing repeats of ''The Big Bang Theory'' and the 9 o'clock dramas on ABC and CBS. 'RoboCop' Reboot: This Is How You Do It
by Joel Hanek With little known about it other than an expectation that every review of this movie will include the word "gritty," the "RoboCop" reboot has loomed over us for months but without much information. With Jose Padilha at the helm (a director who's no stranger to action and police corruption as seen in his "Elite Squad" films) and screenwriter Nick Schenk ("Gran Torino") on board the project, the film has plenty of potential for an awesome adaptation. But unless it finds the perfect blend of action, allegory, and camp that Paul Verhoeven concocted, there is plenty of potential to fall flat. That's why we're here to help. Keep reading for ways to properly reboot "RoboCop" for a new age! WHY WE NEED IT: I will admit I was a late comer to the original 1987 Verhoeven sci-fi classic, but once I remedied that absence from my film repertoire, it instantly became one of my favorites. Sure, looking back the effects and anachronistic ideas of the future in the '80s make some parts feel hokey, but the story is timeless: corporate corruption, police corruption, distrusting the system, and standing up for what's right. The 99% crowd can definitely get behind the themes about the blue collared robot from the Rustbelt. Aside from all that: there are cyborgs, some awesome murder-bots that could use a CGI facelift, and the amount of gore in it would make even Eli Roth and the Human Centipede him/herself blush. WHO WILL PLAY DETROIT'S FAVORITE CYBORG ENFORCER? Officer Alex Murphy is a tricky role: at first, he's the over-the-top, almost naive, do-gooder and once he's transformed into the RoboCop he's the stoic face that somehow still commands a monosyllabic charm. While Michael Fassbender's name has been thrown around as the successor to Peter Weller's metallic exoskeleton, the latest murmer from the rumorsphere points to "The Killing" star Joel Kinnaman being offered the role. Both of these guys could answer the call to duty - but why not play up the "Everyman" aspect of the role - aka, a non-action star? Someone with the cold authority of a Michael Shannon or the familiar dashing scowl of Jon Hamm. To juxtapose the reigned demeanor of RoboCop, the film's villians are wacky and embellished to fill the space. Why not choose an actor who will have fun with it and play it big? The middle-American druglord Clarence Boddicker could be played by someone who's always on the brink of shouting on screen, like a Phillip Seymour Hoffman or John C. Reilly. THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN REBOOTING: Avoid the CGI. Certain aspects of Robocop could be updated with a grace and fluidity that CGI offers such as the ED-209 robots that stalk Delta City - but when it comes to the cyborg himself, leave that to the costume (in other words: don't "Green Lantern" this one, you guys). Officer Anne Lewis. Give her a little more character development, please! And for the love of Verhoeven, please include this somewhere in the movie! The unavoidable reboot treads heavily on the hallowed ground of our beloved classic movies. Since Hollywood's going to destroy everything you've ever loved anyway, let's ride together with the Four Horsemen and embrace the apocalypse of our cinematic nostalgia! Tune into Reboot for more sardonic stupidity, or subject yourself to it willingly by following @joelhanek on Twitter!

Mega Buzz: A CSI Goodbye, Claire's Modern Politics as well as an NCIS Triangular
Marg Helgenberger, Julie Bowen, Cote p Pablo Each week, editors Adam Bryant and Natalie Abrams suit your requirement for TV scoop. Please send all questionsto mega_scoop@tvguide.com. I'm so sad to determine Marg Helgenberger leave CSI. What else could you say about Catherine's exit? - DeAnne ADAM: I'd say it will be pretty poetic, should you read between your lines - and that i know all of you do! While Catherine is dealing with the FBI on the situation including a classic friend (guest star Annabeth Gish), she'll begin to realize her value. "These FBI agents shine one how good she's at what she does," executive producer Carol Mendelsohn states. "I believe Catherine is searching in the next job. Like a lady, Catherine feels she's hit a glass ceiling at CSI. It is something which has been weighing on her behalf, and she or he sees a door to a different existence." But she could most probably return to see, right? "It isn't a 'for always' goodbye," executive producer Don McGill states. "Almost always there is a wide open door." Got any scoop on Modern Family? - Jeremy NATALIE: Remember how Claire mulled running for city council the 2009 season? An approaching episode will feature both debate and subsequent election, which does not go very well for that Dunphy matriarch. "Claire essentially succumbs to a number of nervous tics and freak-outs that, as her children point them out, get even worse right up until she's basically getting an epileptic seizure in the podium," Julie Bowen teases. What's Ziva's response to meeting Tony's ex Wendy on NCIS? - Linda ADAM: Ziva will get her claws into Wendy pretty rapidly, possibly searching for grime on Tony. "Ziva is intrigued by Wendy due to a brief history, and Tony is shocked by the thought of departing them alone," executive producer Gary Glasberg states, adding that both Tony and Wendy have feelings for one another. Try not to search for Wendy's trip to completely deflate this season's Tiva tension. "Through the finish of the season, they are both going to possess a better knowledge of what they need in the future," Glasberg states. Glee please! - MartyNATALIE: Following his unsuccessful friendship-switched-accidental romance with Becky, Artie sets his sights on the new girl: Sugar Motta. Before you decide to scoff thinking of him getting feelings for any tone-hard of hearing, titled ditz, understand this: He's only some of the one having a Sugar craving. "He might have to fight on her with another person," Kevin McHale informs us. Any guesses? What's approaching how I Met Your Mother? - Ryan ADAM: What's one perk of getting buddies within the and surrounding suburbs? Dealing with meet their neighbors! Barney will come across one particularly chatty Trina, who, following a couple of drinks, falls for Barney's pick-up lines. But be careful about your back, Barney: The final guy who broke her heart met the company finish of the cheese knife! It appears like Klaus may be developing romantic feelings for Caroline around the Vampire Journals. Are individuals feelings even feasible for him? - Lanie NATALIE: Hey, hybrid cars have feelings too! Klaus formerly pointed out an old lover, and we'll get more information on that soon. "We are going to explore his past and what would have made him so closed-off," Frederick Morgan states. "The main one factor he needs to learn to do is trust he does not get it in him right now. Due to the unfaithfulness of his family, his father, and everyone who's abandoned him he began to construct relationships and associations according to fear and anger rather. If he is able to learn how to trust, he then includes a chance at loving again." Around The Good Wife, when will Alicia discover concerning the State's Attorney's analysis into Will for possibly bribing idol judges? - Elizabeth ADAM: Soon, and it is going to send a ripple effect with the lawyer. "It does not just touch one individual or three people," Robert King states. "Everyone will get involved." Which is not a positive thing. "The end result is everyone appears to possess a strategy on how to attack might it's type of[like] bumper cars -- [all of the] methods start thumping facing one another," King states. What's approaching on Grey's Anatomy? - Jenna NATALIE: Besides a vacation to another reality along with a special crossover episode, the Dallas Sophistication citizens will quickly be preparing for his or her medical board exams. "We are heading toward [it's included in the finish in our season," executive producer Shonda Rhimes teases. "Many people pass it's many people fail it's. Some individuals careers survive some individuals careers don't. That isn't our finale, but it's a celebration prior to our finale." Is Hotch's love interest Janet likely to hang in there on Criminal Minds? Maybe there is more after her? - Louise ADAM: You will notice her a minimum of a few more occasions, executive producer Erica Messer informs us. "They are lovely," Messer states. "It's nice to possess our figures smile, because in the majority of our episodes, they cannot.Inch Try not to search for Hotch to rejoin the singles scene if things with Janet don't pan out. "I do not see Hotch like a character who's going up to now around much," Messer states. "The truth that his eyes were open enough to determine someone was thinking about him would be a huge step." Can there be still expect Sookie and Eric on True Bloodstream? - Alexis NATALIE: Thinking about that Sookie swore off both Bill and Eric within the season finale, it will be some time before we have seen any movement on that front. "The emotions remain for Eric and Bill," Alexander Skarsgard informs us. "The attraction remains, but they are preoccupied, and thus is she." Rather, search for Bill and Eric to synergy as the vampire world starts to both expand and collapse within the coming season. "The men have usually attempted to kill one another and today all of a sudden need to learn how to become buddies and safeguard one another and interact.Inch So glad Justified has returned! Produce some scoop around the relaxation of year. - Jack ADAM: Boyd's intend to return into prison and exact revenge on Dickie may appear pretty wise, but Raylan may spoil the enjoyment as he understands what his old coal-mining buddy can be. But that is where it starts of Boyd's problems: Search for part of his crew to market him to disastrous results. What's going to occur to the children following a large barn massacre around the Walking Dead? - Harold NATALIE: The barn massacre would be the least from the survivors' worries, especially since Hershel is going to be much more adamant about the subject departing his farm. "While Hershel's suffering this lack of hope and seeking to cope with these complaints, it really leads us right into a new threat and results in the audience to come across something very harmful that'll be a thrilling aspect in the brand new half of year,Inch executive producer Robert Kirkman teases. Obtain a glimpse in the new threat here, and try to guess which True Bloodstream alum is hiding within the shadows. Adam's Mega Rave: Welcome back, Southland. And thank you for getting on Lucy Liu, who holds her very own against Michael Cudlitz having a quiet intensity that helps to make the show's figures so riveting. Knowing because of your passionate response within the MTV Movie Brawl 2012, we are speculating that producing feel exactly the same way. Though he's a number of exclusive costars -- from Ciaran Hinds to Jesse McTeer -- it has been nice to determine that his participation may be the feature from the movie. We are will make the assumption that his character, a parent and lawyer named Arthur Kipps, has had many steps from "Potter" knowing with this image and also the previous trailers launched. An early on United kingdom quad which was launched featured the tagline "Companies ghosts?" Now four . 5 several weeks later, the flick is certainly going another route. 'Bridesmaids' Director, Star Tackle New Projects
New Line's "Police Academy" remake gets a director who not only has proven he can helm very funny content, but also is surprisingly knowledgeable about being a police officer. In other news, Melissa McCarthy's upcoming film "Tammy" also nabs a director, Paul Feig is set to helm a new film (that's not "Bridesmaids 2") and the "Goodfellas" TV show finds itself a network to call home. It's January 10, and you're here for today's daily news round-up. "Tosh.O" helmer Scott Zabielski is going to make his feature film debut directing the upcoming take on the film series that started out at Warner Bros in 1984. Fun fact: Zabielski himself is a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. Not your average citizen on patrol! Melissa McCarthy Flick "Tammy" Gets A Director "Tammy" finally has a director. Deadline is reporting that "Saturday Night Live" veteran Beth McCarthy-Miller will helm the flick. It was written by Melissa McCarthy and intended to be a starring vehicle for her as well. It's likely gaining a lot of interest right now because of her post-"Bridesmaids" popularity. "Tammy" follows a woman who is laid off from her job at a fast food restaurant and finds out her husband is cheating on her. She decides to ditch the life she was living and go on a "road trip of self-discovery" with her potty-mouthed diabetic grandmother. Paul Feig To Direct "The Better Woman" TheWrap has learned that "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig is being tapped to direct "The Better Woman" for Universal. Like "Bridesmaids," "The Better Woman" has a strong line-up of female producers and is being written by a female writer: "Gilmore Girls'" Amy Palladino. The film follows a young executive who gets dumped by her boyfriend for an older woman. She becomes obsessed with getting her boyfriend back but ends up becoming friends with his new lady. "Goodfellas" TV Show Lands At AMC AMC already has meth dealers, sexist advertisers and zombies, so it only seems fair that they add gangsters to the mix. The "Goodfellas" television show was being optioned back in September 2010, and now Deadline is reporting that AMC has picked it up. Nicholas Pileggi and Irwin Winkler, both of whom worked on the original 1990 film, are involved in the upcoming series. No word yet on when AMC plans to bring the show to the small screen. Nicholas Hoult Is One Attractive Zombie In "Warm Bodies" The first images from Jonathan Levine's upcoming zombie romance film "Warm Bodies" have hit the web, and they show a different take on the bloody-thirsty undead creatures than we've seen before. Since "Warm Bodies" is about a zombie falling in love with a human, it's safe to say that Levine wasn't going to make his leading man too gory, but Nicholas Hoult looks to be channeling a little bit of his inner Edward Cullen in these pictures. It will be interesting to see what the other bad zombies and "Boneys" look like in the film in comparison to Hoult. NBC topper appreciates net's 'bad fall'
GreenblattDespite being released of the fall by which NBC produced little, if any, must-see viewing, network topper Bob Greenblatt stated he'll still spend intensely to be able to mine hits. Following a NBCUniversal-Comcast merger, Greenblatt was handed open purse strings by NBCU Boss Steve Burke to invest whatever needs doing to create hits. "As we had develop 'Modern Family,' it could have been worthwhile,Inch stated Greenblatt around the disappointing fall. He acknowledged that NBC spent more about programming compared to year's past but did not cash to exhibit for this yet. "It's like gambling," he told scribes at NBC's area of the Television Experts Assn. tour in Pasadena on Friday. "You do not have any idea what will work and what is not. He later ongoing: "It's a little of the crapshoot, however it makes logical sense for all of us to invest a larger investment than Fox, CBS and ABC. And can we cut back later on? I really hope so." On Burke's capability to keep investing gold coin following a fallow fall and not even close to any sure things ahead, Greenblatt stated, "He's the calmest most unflappable Boss within this entertainment business. Sure, he'd enjoy having it happen faster and in front of schedule, but he's been very patient." Greenblatt also introduced "Community," which in fact had been drawn in the midseason sked, would return early in the year. He added that after it returns, however, the laffer might not be within the difficult 8 p.m. timeslot. "I'm not sure if it seems sensible for this to begin a evening again, but you will find there's tight agenda for comedies and very little spot to place them. We must see where 'Community' helps make the most sense," he stated. The professional gained points with scribes by not sugarcoating NBC's tough begin to the growing season, opening the Q&A period of time having a candid admission: "It had been a very bad fall and worse than I wished for but by what I was expecting.Inch
His greatest disappointment was the Maria Bello starrer "Prime Suspect," which Greenblatt felt would be a champion artistically but never produced any momentum within the rankings, despite moving it round the schedule. "Was she too (a) cable character? Maybe it was too abrasive? Could it have been the hat? I'm not sure," he stated. "Perhaps a hard-striking cop show having a dead body within the first scene wasn't the very best idea." Searching forward, NBC is betting heavily on rookie drama "Smash," which Greenblatt developed as he was running Showtime and required with him to NBC, and also the return of musical competition series "The Voice." "I believe 'Smash' will probably be necessary for us, however i don't think it is a make-or-break show for all of us,Inch stated Greenblatt from the Debra Playing and Katharine McPhee starrer which will launch February. 6, the next day of NBC's telecast from the Super Bowl. "It takes only one show (to show things around) and 'Smash' might be among individuals shows." "The Voice" was clearly's NBC's greatest hit last season and far is riding on the effective second season, but Greenblatt was securing a little about the potential of "The Voice" and "Smash" not succeeding as some anticipate. "It isn't like we'll get into receivership," he joked concerning the possibility both series not reaching high set goals. One subject of debate was the way forward for Ryan Seacrest, that has been rumored to consider over hosting responsibilities for ayem news program "Today," a large profit center for NBC. Seacrest has already been within the corporate family like a host on E! programming and producer from the cabler's hit reality "Kardashian" skeins along with other shows. His moving to "Today" continues to be rumored for several weeks just as one alternative for Matt Lauer, whose current contract expires in the finish of 2012. Greenblatt known as the Seacrest transition to "Today" a little premature. "Our hope and belief is the fact that Matt will remain though finish of his contract," stated Greenblatt, "We have to learn how to take Ryan and him in the household.Inch Greenblatt stated he often see each day when broadcast systems follows the cable type of 13 episodes per season as opposed to the traditional 22. "I'm not sure if every show benefits for getting 22 episodes extended across nine several weeks with repeats," he stated. "What cable does well is provide you with a burst of episodes. The crowd is okay watching from The month of january to May after which returning to The month of january (for any year)." The advantages of cable's business design emerged frequently in the panel, with Greenblatt -- getting switched Showtime into both an honours magnet and profit center for CBS -- saying there have been training that may be moved to broadcast. "The good thing about cable would be that the rankings don't really correlate to tha harsh truth,Inch he stated "At Showtime, 'Prime Suspect' could have been acquired following the third episode, known as a hit-and-run for 4 or 5 seasons." Greenblatt also addressed the alterations implemented throughout yesteryear couple of several weeks around the production side in the re-named Universal Television production wing. Greenblatt stated the studio, that is on the pursuit to produce shows not just for NBC but outdoors systems, "could yield only could yield 100s of huge amount of moneyInch whether it creates hits in the future. Among Universal TV's longest-running shows is Fox's "House." Rankings for that Hugh Laurie drama have been receiving the downtrend recently. When the internet decides to not renew the show for that 2012-13 season, Greenblatt stated it had been doubtful he'd get it for that Peacock due to our prime production cost on the show that's already in the eighth season. Yaffa Yarkoni dies at 86
By ASSOCIATED PRESS Yaffa Yarkoni, a singer who belted out wartime songs only to become a critic of the Israeli military late in life, died Sunday after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was 86. Yarkoni went from entertaining soldiers as a wartime songbird to criticizing the Israeli military's treatment of Palestinians during their uprising last decade. After chiding the military in 2002, Yarkoni was branded a traitor by soldiers' families, received death threats and had a gala tribute to her career canceled. A group of artists held an alternative event to support her freedom of expression. The furor arose when she made comparisons between an Israeli military operation in the West Bank and the Holocaust. "We are a nation that went through the Holocaust. How can we do things like this to another nation?" she told Israel's Army Radio. In an interview she gave to the Associated Press following those remarks, Yarkoni said she was tired of war, of dead young men and heartbroken mothers. "I am tired. For 51 years I am singing about Israel all over the world, telling stories about how it was before -- the first war, the second war, every war. War, war, war. They call me the singer of wars. I don't like this name. I want to be the singer of Israel," she said. Yarkoni's songs tell of Israel's pioneering days following the 1948 war that led to its creation, a war in which she served as a radio operator. For years, the khaki-clad Yarkoni was a fixture at Israeli army bases as she entertained soldiers, and many of her songs became classics that still resonate with Israelis and are performed at remembrance day ceremonies. In 1998, she received the prestigious Israel Prize for Hebrew song. In the end, her powerful music obscured her contentious statements. Upon word of her death, tributes from Israeli politicians across the spectrum poured in, and her music filled radio airwaves. Yarkoni is survived by three daughters, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
